Welcome to

Friends of Grass Lake Township

"Friends of Grass Lake Township" was formed when property on Norvell Road which was zoned agricultural / residential became the proposed site for a gravel pit, which was in close proximity to the Grass Lake High School. During this process, we discovered that there are many concerns in our township that are lacking and require community involvement.

Our organization presents and promotes arts/cultural/environmental and food security projects to keep our town healthy and growing. We also provide scholarships for Senior students at Grass Lake High School.

Thoughts from a community member:

June 1, 2021

Good afternoon. My name is Bob Kraft. I currently serve as the Vice President of the Friends of Grass Lake Township. My wife, Cheryl, and I were fortunate to be residents of Grass Lake from May 2012 until my career offered us a new and exciting opportunity in May 2019, and we relocated to Indiana in January 2020.

While being a resident, we met many great individuals and families, both new to the area as well as lifelong residents. We had so many great times, and I can honestly say that we do miss a lot of the folks from FOGLT as well as many other friends.

FOGLT was formed as a community-oriented response to the proposed Norvell Road Gravel Mine, and fortunately for all residents, we succeeded in diverting those energies elsewhere, thus protecting our residents for the unpleasant circumstances that occur after these operations are up and running.

All the folks that are still active members of the group are extremely passionate and work tirelessly and selflessly to continue the great work that was started a few years ago. FOGLT has now expanded into many other areas, supporting the community. Cheryl and I regret that we’re not present for all of their events, but we do still participate where and when we can, in person or from afar.

It is truly the little things in life, that as we age, make a greater difference in many folk’s lives, not just the materialistic things, especially over the last year, dealing with COVID 19 and how it has changed our lives.

Since joining, I have been energized to see that community involvement is still alive and that the most passionate people are still involved. But, the FOGLT really needs more from everyone. I would ask all residents that were previous members, and those who are maybe undecided about the group: please attend a meeting, listen to what we have to say, and join us in supporting our community.

With your monetary donations, and donations of time and effort, every member’s efforts (be they great or small) contribute something to the community. Seeing that continue through conditions like the COVID pandemic gives all of us a reason to help groups like FOGLT survive and grow.

I sincerely hope that you will consider joining our group, and work to keep Grass Lake the kind of home that it is, and was for us. I can personally attest that it is incredibly rewarding to be involved in something with such visibly tangible benefits to the people and places you care about.

Respectfully,

Bob Kraft

Volunteering – We have many projects planned.

Pledge and/or Join - Link to Square page – The $15 annual Membership fee grants voting rights at the September Special Notified Annual Meeting.

Speaking of helping our community... We coordinated the Whistlestop Park fountain donation. Held in mid-July, Traffic Jam-In has asked us for volunteers. At the Grass Lake Township's request, we are helping solve the recent recycling problem. Most importantly to continue helping our community we need help with our membership drive.

Please attend our meetings and bring your thoughts, ideas, concerns and potential members interested...

Mining in Michigan

"The EGLE Oil, Gas, and Minerals Division (OGMD) regulates several mining industries in Michigan, including metallic mining, native copper mining, sand dune mining, and coal mining. There are also several other important mineral commodities such as gypsum, dimension stone, limestone, and aggregate (gravel pits) that are mined in Michigan but are not regulated by the OGMD. These industries, although not requiring a mining permit from the OGMD, may be subject to federal, state, or local air, water, or land use permits."

WATER TESTING

ABOUT WATER TESTING

…From Roy Margenau

I like the idea of working with the state site [DEQ] because the statistics are automatically entered into their database.

As to what should be tested is a long list:

  • Automated partial chemistry
  • Calcium/magnesium/sodium
  • Alkalinity
  • Ammonia
  • Arsenic
  • Cyanide
  • Phosphates
  • pH determination
  • Potassium
  • Lead or lead/copper
  • Mercury
  • Chlorine
  • Iron
  • Cadmium
  • Hydrogen sulphide

Only if a well is “shallow” should it be necessary to address coliform bacteria or Ecoli bacteria.

Perhaps, many requestors would choose to shorten the list based on their personal concerns.
